Derby Theatre has been awarded £150,000 over three years by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation towards its learning theatre pilot programme.

The Paul Hamlyn Foundation is one of the largest independent foundations in the UK, making grants to organisations which maximise opportunities for individuals to experience a full quality of life.

Sarah Brigham, Derby Theatre’s artistic director, said, “This support from one of the most respected foundations in the UK is a very welcome validation of our plans and our commitment to local audiences, participants and artists.

“We’re garnering a lot of attention for our learning theatre vision and how it forms an integral part of the cultural life in the city, and also how it benefits the industry nationally. This support will really help us to achieve our unique ambitions.”

Régis Cochefert, head of arts at the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, said, “We believe participation in the arts can be transformational for individuals and communities, so we look forward to seeing this work benefiting the people of Derby.”

Derby Theatre’s learning theatre model aims to integrate creative learning through every element of its work. It “provides value, enjoyment and benefit to many individuals and groups who engage with the theatre, whether they are audience members, artists, students, schools or participants.”

The theatre, which is part of the University of Derby, won a Times Higher Education award for excellence and innovation in the arts in 2013 for its learning theatre model.

During 2013 the theatre secured £400,000 from trusts and foundations—more than it receives annually from Arts Council England—including £164,000 from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation to support its work as a learning theatre.
