Birmingham Hippodrome is to stage two free weekends of outdoor performance in the Southside area of the city.

Summer in Southside will give visitors the chance to experience physical theatre, dance, circus, puppetry, storytelling and more.

Paul Kaynes, the Hippodrome’s director of creative programmes, said, “For the past three summers we’ve brought unusual outdoor performances to the city which have been enjoyed by thousands of people.

“This year we’re delighted to be producing two big weekends of free performances especially for visitors to Southside.”

The performances will take place on Hippodrome Square, Arcadian, Inge Street and Hurst Street which are within a three-minute walk of one another.

Among the attractions on Saturday (3 August) from 12 noon until 7PM will be Nocturne by Marc Brew Company, “an intimate bedtime story about restless nights” which “draws you into the home lives of four exquisite dancers as they share their hidden dreams”; Da Motus with Con Tatto which follows eight Swiss dancers as they “create dynamic shapes and interact with the architecture”; Trolleys by C-12 Dance Theatre which is “part dance, part ballet, part supermarket sweep” which combines street dance and aerobics; and H2H by Joli Vyann, “a dance performance about how we express ourselves and what our hands say about us”.

On the Bank Holiday weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 24 and 25 August, there will be live events again from 12 noon until 7PM.

Nofit State Circus will perform Open House; Graeae will stage The Iron Man; Upswing will present Red Shoes; and four dancers from Warwickshire-based Motionhouse will be confined within a steel cage in Captive.
