Putting On Panto to Pay for the Pinter

As part of a thriving series of public lectures, Rose Bruford College’s Stanisklavski Centre has announced its latest talk: ‘Putting on Panto to Pay for the Pinter: mid twentieth century repertory pantomime as genre, financial support and historical artefact.’

Exploring his recently published book which outlines the history of the Salisbury Playhouse pantomimes, Dr Chris Abbott of King’s College, London will explore the productions’ strong links with the Edwardian Harlequinade and detail how the annual pantomime helped finance ‘serious’ drama at the venue between 1955 and 1985. The talk will also encompass the productions’ enduring effect on a generation of actors, such as top pantomime performers Chris Harris and Christopher Biggins, who started their careers at the Playhouse.

The talk will be illustrated with the words of the many actors interviewed by Abbott as part of his research process for Putting on Panto to Pay for the Pinter and include a wide range of production photographs, as well as behind the scenes images taken during pantomime rehearsals and performances.

‘Putting on Panto to Pay for the Pinter: mid twentieth century repertory pantomime as genre, financial support and historical artefact’ will take place at 6.30pm on Wednesday 13th March 2013 in Room C118 at Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance, Sidcup. The event is open to the general public and does not require a ticket.
