Hamlet in Noh style

Japan Society North West stages a free Noh performance of Hamlet on Wednesday December 19 at Bowdon Parish Centre, Stamford Road, Bowdon, near Altrincham.

The Noh Shakespeare Group led by Kuniyoshi Munakata, a professor of English literature, has been staging Noh-style Hamlets in English since 1982.

The marriage of two great theatre traditions makes each more meaningful to audiences unfamiliar with them.

Noh theatre was founded by Kan’ami and Zeami, father and son, in the late 14th century.

Patronised by Shoguns for almost 500 years, it is thought to be the most refined Japanese traditional theatre art.
