Former EastEnders actor Dean Gaffney is in hospital in Derby after sustaining head injuries in a car crash.

Gaffney had just finished the second night at Derby Theatre of a touring production of Agatha Christie’s A Murder Is Announced when his car hit the central reservation of the A38 just outside the city centre.

The 34-year-old was taken to the Royal Derby Hospital where he was detained.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said, “The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was taken to hospital to be treated for head injuries.

“No other vehicles were involved and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.”

The theatre issued a statement: “Ian Dickens Productions (producers) and Derby Theatre regretfully announce that Dean Gaffney has been involved in a serious car accident.

“He is currently being treated in hospital and we are awaiting more news on his condition.

“Having spoken with the rest of the cast, the company and theatre have decided to go ahead with the remaining performances.

“Our thoughts are with Dean and his family and we wish him all the best for his continued recovery over the coming days.”
