Birmingham Hippodrome has reached its £1m target towards the cost of refurbishment which has already been carried out at the 30-year-old building.

The stage was replaced, more than 500 light fittings were upgraded, the orchestra pit was refurbished and the entrance foyer was remodelled.

The Hippodrome set up a stage appeal to raise funds towards the total cost of more than £2m.

Significant donations came from the Monument Trust (part of the Sainsbury Family Trusts), the Wolfson Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Foyle Foundation and the JP Getty Jnr Charitable Trust. Twenty-one local trusts contributed.

The corporate sector donated just over £165,000 through events and dinners.

Donations from members of the audience and local community organisations totalled more than £173,000.

John Crabtree, chairman of Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre Trust, said, “The extensive backstage and foyer improvements will benefit everyone as they make the theatre more efficient, ensuring we can continue to be a stage for the best in the world.”
