The Lowry, holders of the world’s largest collection of LS Lowry’s work, had an avalanche of global traffic to its web site last week as a result of a birthday search engine tribute.
It’s 125 years since the birth of Lowry resulting in Google marking the event by assigning the day’s ‘doodle’ to him. The influential search engine regularly marks special celebrations and causes with graphic tributes on its home page.
Staff at the Salford arts centre reported a dramatic increase in visitors to their web site as a result.
Michael Simpson, Head of Visual Arts and Engagement at The Lowry, said they had seen 20 times the amount of visitors to their web site as people arrived at work or to study and found one of Lowry’s paintings looking back from Google’s homepage.
