Troublesome People: who is right?

A company nominated for the best theatre award at Buxton Fringe with its first production is to return with a drama questioning the ideology of war.

Ashrow Theatre presented Being Nice by Mark Niel at Buxton in 2011. Now the company will perform Troublesome People by Jill Haas.

The author said, “my initial inspiration comes from the unpublished letters and diaries of a friend’s parents—both were COs during World War II. The fact that conscientious objection would have been my own stance made them especially compelling and inspired me to look at published accounts and the work of pacifist groups.”

Troublesome People asks who is right: “the German who has been treated terribly or the conscientious objector whose passionate belief in the wrongness of war matches any war manifesto”.

Company producer Rowan Scarborough, who plays Leni, said, “I’m incredibly proud of Troublesome People and really hope audiences in Buxton will enjoy it as much as they did Being Nice last time.”

Troublesome People will be presented at the United Reformed Church, Buxton on Wednesday 22 and Friday 24 July at 6:15PM, Thursday 23 July at 1:15PM, Saturday 25 July at 7:45PM and Sunday 26 July at 3:15PM.

The production then moves to Edinburgh before returning to Ashrow’s home, Derby, where it will be performed in the Guildhall from Sunday 27 until Wednesday 30 September.
