DEparture Lounge, a “theatrical rollercoaster ride of top-class touring theatre, quirky and contemporary productions, Sunday site-specific shows, an Edinburgh pick-and-mix and much more”, is to be staged at Derby Theatre and in unusual places around the city.
It is the second year that Derby Theatre has staged DEparture Lounge. Artistic director Sarah Brigham says, “This is an exciting next stage for DEparture Lounge—bringing more top-quality and innovative theatre to Derby.
“My personal highlights are The Alternative World Cup, which fuses high-octane dance with freestyle football, and Early Doors, a great night of storytelling and drama in your local pub.”
Among the other shows is a rehearsed reading by Fifth Word Theatre of Jane Upton’s new play which has the working title of All the Little Lights. There will be a discussion afterwards featuring Sarah Brigham which will discuss the new writing landscape in the East Midlands.
Among the attractions for artists is a commissioning coffee morning with Rob Drummer, associate dramaturg of London’s Bush Theatre; a new writing master class with award-winning playwright Nick Payne; and a Friday lunch project—a discussion over food with theatre-maker Rebecca Atkinson-Lord on how things could be better for artists and theatre makers.
Full details about DEparture Lounge, which takes place from Thursday until Sunday, 17 to 20 July, are available at the Derby Theatre web site.
