Joanna Riding will play Madame Rose in Gypsy: A Musical Fable which will open the 2022 Buxton International Festival at the Derbyshire town’s Opera House.

Riding is best known for her work in musical theatre, winning Olivier Awards for best actress in a musical for Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel in 1993 and My Fair Lady, with a book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, ten years later.

Paul Kerryson, chief executive of Buxton Opera House, said, “we’re so thrilled to be able to cast such an accomplished performer in one of the most iconic roles ever written for musical theatre.”

Michael Williams of Buxton International Festival commented, “following the success of Sondheim’s A Little Night Music last summer, we’re delighted to be combining forces with Buxton Opera House again this year for Gypsy: A Musical Fable. Joanna Riding will make a brilliant Rose, the ultimate showbiz mother.”

Gypsy: A Musical Fable, with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents, will run from Thursday 7 until Sunday 24 July.
