Artist and printmaker Joanna Allen from New Mills has won Buxton Fringe’s design competition for the second time in four years.

Her artwork “Good Day Sunshine”, a collagraph print with a sun motif, will be used on the 2022 Fringe printed programme and on flyers and other publicity. She also wins £100.

She said of her design, “I wanted to create an image that conveyed a sense of optimism and joy—it’s about the coming together of people to celebrate all the arts. The happy sun face was inspired by images of architecture around Buxton and the flags representing the Fringe festival.”

Allen has exhibited at the Fringe in the past while her family, musician brother Will Hawthorne and her sister Susie Hawthorne and brother-in-law George Telfer who are both actors, have been involved as Fringe performers over the years.

Three joint runners-up were announced: Annie Osborne, Emma Bouchier and Kira Smith. The Fringe hopes it may be able to use their entries in Fringe publicity.

Buxton Fringe marketing officer Stephanie Billen said, “Joanna’s winning sun design was beautifully executed, eye-catching and conveyed a lovely positive message about the Fringe. For me it really pulled at the heartstrings as we emerge from the darkness of COVID.

“One of our judging panel summed it up when she said it just made her smile.”

The 2022 Buxton Fringe will take place from 6 until 24 July.
