Disney’s The Lion King, which has completed a sell-out run at Birmingham Hippodrome, generated “millions of pounds” for the local economy, according to Marketing Birmingham, the body responsible for promoting the city.

The “largest touring theatre production in UK history” attracted visitors from New Zealand, Kuwait and throughout Europe. More than 190,000 people saw the 109 performances at the Hippodrome.

Stuart Griffiths, the venue’s chief executive, said, “Working with Disney for the past two years bringing The Lion King to Birmingham has been one of the most rewarding challenges the Hippodrome team has ever undertaken.

“It’s a massive show requiring great teamwork and focus—from the box office and customer service staff to the backstage crew and administration.

“Half of all people who booked had never previously bought a Hippodrome ticket.

“We’re delighted that the summer has been such a ‘roaring’ success and we can’t wait to welcome another Disney show soon.”
