Derby’s Guildhall Theatre has been closed at least until the end of January because of essential maintenance work.

The 242-seat theatre, which is part of Derby LIVE and is run by the city council, has remained open for several months while the work has been going on. But the authority says that “unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, this is no longer possible.”

A council spokesman said, “we apologise to our customers and partners for the inconvenience caused, but we have a duty to operate safely. All customers will be contacted and we will look at rescheduling shows where feasible.”

An amateur pantomime at the Grade II listed building has been put off until the summer. Derby company Oddsocks has sold almost 1,000 tickets for its production Robin Hood and the Revolting Peasants which will now be staged at Landau Forte College in the city on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 February.
