South Shields-born X Factor winner Joe McElderry is to appear in a gala performance of Dirty Dancing at Sunderland Empire later this month.

He will perform the finale number Time of My Life at the performance on Tuesday 25th September in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. During that week there will be bucket collections after the show in aid of the charity, for which McElderry is an ambassador and North East patron.

“Musical theatre is a huge passion of mine,” he said, “and I’ve always been a huge fan of Dirty Dancing and so I’m very excited to be taking part!”

His new album Here’s What I Believe will be released on 10 September,

Dirty Dancing producer Karl Sydow added, “We are thrilled that Joe is joining us in Sunderland! I have personally supported the Teenage Cancer Trust for a number of years and I’ve seen at first hand the difference the specialist units can make to the lives of young people affected by this disease.”

Dirty Dancing will run at the Sunderland Empire from Tuesday 18th September to Saturday 6th October 2012.
