Coventry's Belgrade Theatre and Strictly Arts Theatre Company have announced the six Midlands-based writers who will develop a digital TV series, SeaView.

Selected from 106 applicants, the six are Daniel Anderson, Annabel Brightling, Sophie Griffin, Sam Kurd, Dave Payne and Rory Rawson. They will work with script editor Sophie Ellerby and series creator Corey Campbell to develop stories for a six-part series which will première in 2021.

SeaView is based on an original idea by Campbell, the Belgrade’s co-artistic director for 2021 and artistic director of Strictly Arts Theatre Company. It is an urban science-fiction drama drawing on the experiences of working-class communities in the West Midlands. Inspired by a true story, it follows the journey of Steven, a young man destined for great things who finds himself trapped by the destiny of others.

Campbell said, “we were overwhelmed by the response to our open call-out and were hugely impressed by the quality of the applications. It’s been a difficult decision choosing six writers to join our team and we’d like to thank everyone who took the time to apply.

“Recruiting writers from the Midlands is part of our broader commitment to using this project to create opportunities for local talent. We’re very excited to get started as we meet our writers for the first time this week and look forward to showing the wider world what the Midlands has to offer in 2021.”
