The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester has appointed Stephen Freeman as its new executive director.

He will join the company following his role as chief executive at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, which has thrived under his leadership and partnership with artistic director Paul Robinson.

Having spent several years as an Arts Council England relationship manager for theatre in the North West, he has a long association with Manchester and with the work of the Exchange.

Sarah Frankcom, Royal Exchange Artistic Director, said, "Stephen is passionate about theatre, he is an innovative, creative thinker with a unique insight into what it takes to make original theatre and develop strong, long-term connections with audiences.

"I am delighted that he will be joining us here at the Exchange. Stephen brings with him a huge amount of knowledge and a breadth of experience that will be invaluable to the future of the Royal Exchange. I look forward to working with him on the next stage of our journey."
