Belfast-based dance company Northern Attitudes is to present its debut show, The Gate House, in the city’s St Anne’s Cathedral as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival.
Choreographed by the company’s founder and artistic director, Michael McEvoy, The Gate House is an autobiographical piece featuring three generations—McEvoy himself, his father and grandfather—and is described as “an original dance theatre” that will “bring you to a Belfast you’ve never before experienced… it is a sharing of heartbreak, residence and hope”.
A graduate of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, McEvoy is currently in Brussels, supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the British Council’s Artist International Development Fund. He has previously worked with NI Opera, Maiden Voyage Dance, Prime Cut Productions and the Lyric Theatre, Belfast, and his own multi-disciplinary company, POKE Theatre.
The Gate House is co-produced by Prime Cut Productions having been developed through its Reveal Programme with additional support from the Jerwood Foundation.
With newly composed music by Joshua Burnside, its seven-strong cast includes McEvoy himself alongside Angus Bartlett, Clara Kerr, Diarmuid Armstrong, Ollie Robertson, Hannah Scully and Rosie Mullin.
The Gate House runs at St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast from November 1–2.
