King's Head Opera and TheatreOlivier Award-winning OperaUpClose with Eclectic Opera has launched Flourish, a new competition for opera composers and librettists.

Extracts of up to five shortlisted operas will be showcased at the King's Head Theatre in Islington on 30 September, from which a winner will be chosen by a panel of industry judges. The winners will then develop the piece into a full-length production over the following year for a seven-performance season over four weeks in autumn 2013.

Submissions are now being requested of pieces for up to six performers, which must be submitted by midnight on 2 September.
