Barrie Rutter, the Artistic Director of long-running regional touring company Northern Broadsides, is to receive an OBE in this year’s Honours List.
Rutter was raised in Hull and spent much of his early career at the RSC and National Theatre. He is currently in preparation for the title role in a major touring production of King Lear, to be directed by Jonathan Miller.
Now aged 68, Rutter formed Northern Broadsides in 1992 to showcase ‘Northern voices, doing classical work in non-velvet spaces’. They are based in Halifax, from where they tour extensively across the country.
Rutter described his OBE, for services to drama, as ‘a great honour’, and an award which he wished to share with his ‘colleagues, friends and audiences of Northern Broadsides’.
