The Empty Space

NE theatre support organisation The Empty Space, which is based at Dance City in Newcastle, is again collaborating with Live Theatre once on their regular bursary. To celebrate Live's 40th birthday, one bursary of £2500 will be given to a North East based theatre maker to explore a new approach to creating and using new writing in theatre. Three companies will be shortlisted and given £500 and a week's rehearsal space to develop their ideas to a point where they can appear in the Empty Space/Live Theatre Scratch Night on 12 December.

Feedback from the audience and development discussions with each of the companies will determine which is awarded the full bursary and a chance to perform the finished show at Live in 2014.

The deadline for applications is 11th October and full details can be found on the web site. In the first instance proposals (no more than a sheet of A4) should be submitted with the following details:

  • An outline of the project
  • The artists involved
  • Some idea of the writing/devising process involved
  • How this bursary would help this project and the individuals involved
  • How this project represents a development of your work

The organisation is also considering ways of supporting new and mid-career producers in the region: paid internships, continuing professional development programmes, and Associate positions. However before they reach any firm conclusions they would like to hear from anyone in the North East who is, or would like to be, a theatre or dance producer.

Anyone who wants to join the discussion should email Natalie Querol at [email protected].
