Northampton’s Royal and Derngate has been chosen as one of the first regional theatres to be part of an apprentice scheme for aspiring theatre producers.

The scheme is run by Stage One, a charity which supports new UK theatre producers and productions.

New producers are given an opportunity to “work alongside established producers and gain invaluable experience to help them turn their ambitions into reality”.

Royal and Derngate is looking for an apprentice producer to be based at the theatre on a six-month placement to gain an insight into all aspects of producing at a regional theatre.

The successful candidate will assist the producer and artistic director with all aspects of the management and administration of producing theatre including casting, negotiating and managing contracts, applying for rights and licences, commissioning new plays, drawing up production budgets and providing production support as necessary.

The apprentice producer will also take part in Stage One’s training workshops in London throughout the placement.

Royal and Derngate’s producer John Manning said, “This is a very exciting opportunity for the right person to learn all aspects of how to produce shows in a busy working theatre.

“Over six months the successful candidate will get to work closely alongside me and James Dacre on his first season of shows as artistic director.

“This is the first time the scheme has been held regionally and it’s a real honour that we’ve been selected as one of only four regional theatres to take part.”

The successful candidate will take up the post from October until April. More information and details of how to apply can be found on the current vacancies section at www.royalandderngate.co.uk.

Applications must be submitted by 16 September.
