Auditions: community actors wanted for Arthur Miller play

Northampton’s Royal and Derngate is looking for people to be part of a community ensemble for its world premiere of Arthur Miller’s The Hook.

Selected community actors will be given the opportunity to take part in a series of workshops led by Royal and Derngate’s artistic director James Dacre.

The theatre will stage The Hook in June in a co-production with Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse. It will mark the centenary of Miller’s birth.

The play was suppressed in the 1950s by the FBI for fear that it could cause unrest in New York’s dockyards. Sixty years on, the dockyards of Brooklyn’s waterfront will come alive on the Royal stage for the story of Marty Ferrara, a longshoreman who takes a stand against the corruption he witnesses from the authorities who control the docks.

Initial workshop auditions which will be relaxed and informal will take place at the theatre in groups of 15 for an hour on Tuesday 24 and Thursday 26 February. There will be slots at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30PM.

Anyone over 18 may audition. To register and get a timed slot to attend, download a registration form from the Royal and Derngate web site or pick up a form at the box office. For more information contact John Manning on 01604 655784 or e-mail [email protected].

Those selected from the auditions will be invited to a series of workshops on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings for four weeks from 5 May.
