Nottingham’s first artist-led space for theatre and performance N_SPACE has been transformed into a “pop-up festival” for Shake It Up Europe, a celebration of European art and artists as part of Nottingham European Arts and Theatre Festival 2016 (neat16).

Nonsuch Theatre took over and transformed a former school of dancing on Clarendon Street in September 2015. The building now comprises two rehearsal and performance studios, offices and artist storage space.

Nonsuch’s artistic director Edward Boott said, “Shake It Up Europe is about seeing theatre differently and we’re really excited to see how the audiences of Nottingham respond. It’s been a long time coming, but now that Nottingham has an artist-led space for theatre it’s the perfect moment to do something bold and brave like this.”

During the final week of neat16, SoundBoxed Collective will fuse beats, physical theatre and spoken word to explore the greed of city living in The Karen on Saturday 11 June.

Nottingham Playhouse’s artistic director Giles Croft said, “one of the thrilling things about neat16 is the opportunity it gives to demonstrate the creative ambition of a truly European city: Nottingham. There’s no better example of this than the brilliantly imaginative programme devised by Nonsuch Theatre, which provides a perfect complement to the rest of this year’s city-wide festival.”
