A show that became an unexpected off-Broadway hit nine years ago, Cougar the Musical is to have its UK première at The Belgrade Theatre, Coventry.

American writer and lyricist Donna Moore first heard the term cougar at a party and wrote a song for her one-woman show The Cougar Cabaret. A producer in the audience one night said he would get behind her if she wrote a whole show around the subject.

She said, “unlike those who see the cougar as predator, I prefer to see the older woman / younger man relationship as a way women can empower themselves. I wanted this show to humanize the cougar, to show that women come in all shapes and sizes and each woman is special no matter what.

“I think the show comes from a real place. It speaks to people in a way that is truthful and authentic. It’s a funny and joyful celebration of three women embracing life and everything that comes with saying ‘yes’ to whatever opportunities come their way. I think that’s something a lot of us, men and women, can relate to.

“If nothing else, I want men and women who come to see this show to leave with their spirits uplifted, a song in their heart and perhaps a racy story or two to share with their friends.”

The cast features Pippa Winslow as Lilly, Dawn Hope as Clarity and Suanne Braun as Mary-Marie.

Belgrade creative associate Patricia Benecke directs. Design is by Juliet Shillingford, with video and lighting design by Arnim Friess. Additional music and lyrics are by Mark Barkan, John Baxidine, Arnie Gross, Meryl Leppard and Seth Lefferts. The show features choreography by Racky Plews. Musical director is Neil McDonald.

Cougar the Musical runs in the B2 auditorium at the Belgrade from Saturday 16 May until Saturday 6 June.
