Roald Dahl's first children's book and one of his most popular stories, James and the Giant Peach is to play a 12-week Christmas season in Birmingham before going on a UK tour.

Birmingham Stage Company will be bringing to life the story of James, a lonely young boy who lives with Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker—two of the most revolting aunts in England.

One day he meets a mystical old man who gives him a bag that contains the strongest magic the world has ever known.

When James accidentally spills the bag near an old peach tree, the most incredible things start to happen—and James’s adventure begins.

The BSC is renowned for its Roald Dahl shows. In the company’s 20-year history the BSC has produced stage productions of six other Dahl books as well as other adaptations including Horrible Histories, The Jungle Book and Tom’s Midnight Garden.

David Wood has adapted James and the Giant Peach which will be directed by Nikolai Foster. Design is by Colin Richmond, music by Grant Olding, lighting by James Whiteside, sound by Seb Frost and choreography by Drew McConie.

The cast includes Tom Gillies as James, Claire Greenway, Chris Lindon, Giovanna Ryan, Rhys Saunders, Sioned Saunders and Iwan Tudor.

James and the Giant Peach plays Birmingham Old Rep from Wednesday (14 November) until Saturday 2 February.
