Warwick-based Playbox Theatre, which produces “world-class theatre for young people”, is to tour Tokyo in July 2025—the company's fourth visit to Japan and the first for 18 years.

Playbox directors and senior actors will lead workshops and training events using the company’s “unique” approach to the arts, enabling theatre skills and techniques to support English language learning for hundreds of Japanese children at a range of venues.

The visit will be hosted by Model Language Studio, which has a “pioneering approach to learning English through lively, immediate interaction, role play and theatre”. Playbox first collaborated with MLSin 1994.

Announcing the tour, Playbox’s artistic director Emily Jane Quash said, “we’re thrilled to be returning to Tokyo next summer, with a new generation of excellent Playbox actors. As a member of Playbox myself, touring to Japan in 1995 and exchanging with MLS was one of the most important and formative experiences of my life.

“I’m so excited to be taking a really wonderful company on tour next summer and I hope it will be as life-changing for them as it was for me.”
