Pop star Joe McElderry is to give South Shields Customs House a New Year's gift.

The X Factor winner has sold out two shows at The Customs House on 21 and 22 February 2015, and has now added a third show, this time with all the proceeds going to the venue.

The 23-year-old from South Shields used to work at the theatre, where customers called him "the singing waiter", before winning the TV talent show.

He has sold out five hometown gigs in 2014 with another two in 2015. He will now perform a extra matinée performance at 2:30PM on Sunday 22 February as part of his Evolution Tour.

"After all of my memories and amazing times at The Customs House throughout my career and previously," he said, "I wanted to give back to a place that is very important for performing arts in South Shields."

Next year marks a special year for The Customs House as it marks the 150th anniversary of the building and its 21st year as an entertainments venue.

The show will be called The Evolution Tour Supporting The Customs House and will raise funds for The Customs House Trust, which provides art and cultural activities for the people of South Tyneside.

The venue’s executive director Ray Spencer, MBE, said, "2015 is such a special year and Joe has made it all the more special by showing his support for what we do here. We hope the people of South Tyneside follow in his footsteps and help support what we do in the community.

"Joe’s latest show is sure to be another knock-out performance and we’re delighted he is doing so well. We’d just like to say well done Joe and thank you for your support."

Tickets are £20.50 (£19 concessions) or £64 for a family ticket and are now available from the box office.
