Nottingham Puppet Festival is to be held for the third time in April 2024 and will include a theatre production of Life of Pi, based on the novel by Yann Martel.

Produced by the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall and arts charity City Arts (Nottingham), the festival will showcase “the many diverse and exciting forms that puppetry can take” and you should expect to see “everything from giant Hindu gods in Listergate to hand-carved marionettes in Sneinton”. The festival was first held in 2018 and returned in 2021.

The Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall will host Life of Pi. City Arts will lead a community engagement programme showcasing puppetry in libraries and community centres across Nottingham and will also produce a takeover of the city’s streets on Saturday 13 April featuring Mahogany Carnival Arts who appeared in the Platinum Jubilee Pageant in 2022.

Nottingham Playhouse, New Art Exchange, Squire Performing Arts Centre and Lakeside Arts will host a range of local, national and international puppet shows.

Jonathan Saville, programming director at the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, said, “Nottingham Puppet Festival is becoming a regular event in the city’s cultural calendar and it’s something we’re all incredibly proud and excited to be involved with.”

The festival will take place from Tuesday 9 until Sunday 21 April.
