Rep revives Tartuffe for Brummie audience

The Royal Shakespeare Company production of Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto’s version of Molière’s Tartuffe is to return to Birmingham Rep in autumn 2022.

The adaptation of the French comedy, “revived for a Brummie audience”, tells the story of charismatic chameleon Tahir Taufiq Arsuf, “a Rasputin for the 21st century”. It is set in the Pakistani-Muslim community of Birmingham’s Sparkhill and Stratford Road.

Asif Khan who took the title role at the Rep in 2020 will again play Tartuffe. Also returning will be Salman Akhtar who will play Damee Pervaiz, Anshula Bain (Mariam Pervaiz), Natalia Campbell (Amira), Qasim Mahmood (Waqaas), Simon Nagra (Imran) and Riad Richie (Usman). New to the cast are Siddiqua Akhtar (Dadimaa Pervaiz), Olga Fedori (Darina), Paige Round (DCI Sarah Wells) and Pippa and Roderick Smith (Khalil).

Birmingham-born Rep associate director Iqbal Khan, who directed the opening ceremony for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, will again direct.

Tartuffe will run from Friday 14 October until Saturday 5 November.
