Newcastle-under-Lyme’s New Vic Theatre is to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide with a return of a play last seen in 2022, My Thousand Year Old Land.

It was written by Bosnian war survivor Aida Haughton MBE along with Susan Moffat, director of the New Vic’s Borderlines initiative, which uses theatre in social contexts.

The play is based on testimonies of survivors from the genocide and war crimes that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995. It tells a story of war and the search for truth, justice and hope through women whose lives are changed by the deaths of the men in their communities.

The cast includes Stasha Dukić who will play Istina (Truth), Katarina Krištić as Pravda (Justice) and Christina Bain who will play Nada (Hope).

My Thousand Year Old Land will visit the Loading Bay, Bradford as part of its City of Culture celebrations on Tuesday 8 July and the Holocaust Centre North, Huddersfield on Wednesday 9 July before returning to the New Vic for a matinée performance on Friday 11 July.
