Birmingham-based theatre company Stan’s Cafe is returning to its home city with a performance piece which has recently been seen at the Perth International Arts Festival in Australia.

Of All The People In The World, a free show “which straddles the line between theatre and art”, marks the company’s tenth anniversary.

It uses grains of rice to represent individual people and communicate human population statistics.

Twenty-three tonnes of rice representing 1.5 billion people will be shipped into Two Snowhill—“the biggest UK office development to be built outside London since the start of the recession”—for the event.

James Yarker, Stan’s Cafe’s founder and artistic director, was inspired to create a meaningful way to bring statistics to life.

The show which debuted in 2003 has been seen in more than 50 cities worldwide including Adelaide, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Washington, New York and Tokyo.

Taking up the sixth floor of the 14-storey building, Of All The People In The World allows public access to the landmark building before it is occupied.

“After a decade of touring the world with the show, we’re excited to be celebrating its anniversary in such a spectacular venue with amazing views over our home city,” said Yarker.

“We’re hoping to welcome people of all ages from all walks of life to this show, which is about us all and the world we share.”

Of All The People In The World can be seen from Friday (12 April) until Sunday 21 April.
