Up to seven up-and-coming writers are to get the chance to work on a digital TV series, SeaView, an original science-fiction drama drawing on the experiences of working-class communities in the West Midlands.

Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre, Strictly Arts Theatre Company, Birmingham-based Fix 8 Films, Run Home Productions and Oldbury company Audio Bassment are looking for emerging writers based in the Midlands to be part of a writers’ room for the series.

Inspired by a true story, SeaView follows Steven, a young man destined for great things who finds himself trapped by the destiny of others.

Tormented by his gift for prophecy and haunted by his dreams, Steven tries to break the cycle of lies, crime and violence that has ensnared his family but finds himself in an impossible position.

The series will make its debut with a screening at the Belgrade Theatre in 2021, followed by an online release. The project is the product of a new collaboration that will involve theatre and film production companies working together in new ways.

Each writer will get the chance to work on one episode alongside playwright Sophie Ellerby and the Belgrade’s Corey Campbell.

Successful applicants will be given support to develop screenwriting skills and be provided with the space to create their own ideas.

The writers’ room will run from 6:30 to 8:30PM every Thursday from 16 July until Thursday 15 October 2020. Further details can be found at the Belgrade Theatre web site.
