Aliki Chapple in M.A.I.R.O.U.L.A.

Aliki Chapple will perform Lena Kitsopoulou’s M.A.I.R.O.U.L.A., “a personal Greek crisis with an authentic, intimate Greek voice”, at Buxton Fringe.

The show is a “darkly humorous, linguistically playful and frank solo show” which is “partly autobiographical, partly absurd and also an allegory of the country’s modern woes”.

The character Mairoula will explain the acronym as well as a few other acronyms of her own invention. But first she has some other things she wants to tell you: about sex and death and watermelons, why she would welcome a devastating earthquake and how she wishes you all the happiness in the world.

M.A.I.R.O.U.L.A. was a sell-out at the Greek National Theatre. Outspokenly political, the award-winning Kitsopoulou is hugely popular in Greece. Her work has been translated into German, French, Spanish, Polish and English.

The play is written, translated and performed by Aliki Chapple. Stella Duffy directs, design is by Nerissa Cargill Thompson and sound design by Martyn Duffy.

M.A.I.R.O.U.L.A. will be presented at Underground Venues on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 July at 3:45PM and Friday 17 July at 5:45PM.
