The eighth annual Leeds Opera Festival from Monday 5 August to Sunday 8 September will include what is claimed to be the first-ever opera featuring the world’s most famous fictional detective.

Sherlock Holmes and the Sign of Four, by Scottish composer Lliam Paterson, will be performed by Northern Opera Group at Leeds School of Arts for four nights from Wednesday 28 August, with bass Edward Hawkins as Holmes and tenor David Horton as Watson.

Continuing the theme, the festival will present an interactive mystery show for 8- to 12-year-olds in West Yorkshire libraries that offers an immersive experience in opera, and operate a Musical Escape Room at Locked-in Games, Chapeltown Road, Leeds.

The programme, which concentrates on innovative ways to experience opera and to bring it to new audiences, was developed by guest artistic director Emma Hill and Opera Rave.
