Rise to fame: Gypsy

Everything is coming up roses for Buxton Opera House and Buxton International Festival who are to present their second joint production, the musical Gypsy.

The two organisations got together to stage Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music in 2021 and will collaborate in 2022 on Gypsy which has lyrics by Sondheim, book by Arthur Laurents and music by Jule Styne.

Gypsy tells the true story of the rise to fame of burlesque star Gypsy Rose Lee and her tempestuous relationship with her ambitious mother Rose. Some critics consider Rose to be the best role in any musical.

Buxton Opera House chief executive Paul Kerryson will direct Gypsy which includes the songs “Let Me Entertain You”, “Everything's Coming Up Roses”, “You Gotta Have a Gimmick” and “Some People”.

Gypsy will run on Thursday 7 July, Saturday 9 July, Wednesday 13 July, Saturday 16 July, Wednesday 20 July and Sunday 24 July.
