Spanish street theatre company Sarruga, which performed at the first Derby Festé, is returning to mark the festival’s tenth anniversary.
Festé is an “annual extravaganza of city-wide live performances and breath-taking acts”, most of which are free.
Sarruga’s director and creator Pakito Gutiérrez said, “the Sarruga project stems from a very basic idea: paper figures working on a large scale with awe-inspiring consequences.
“Our shows transform everyday spaces and streets into a fantastic world, change the routine, arouse curiosity, stimulate the imagination and feed the senses of the audience.
“I think street theatre is very important because it is probably the most democratic and free way to bring art to all people, and to get communities to share emotions in an open way.
“In this case, Derby Festé represents one of these platforms, perhaps one of the most important for the company Sarruga.”
The company’s Dragons was on show at the first Festé and will return in 2016. Giant, fire-breathing creatures will travel through the streets of Derby from Riverlights, along St Peters Street and into the Cathedral Quarter from 8:45PM on Friday 23 September.
The headline event on Saturday 24 September will be French company Transe Express’s new outdoor performance MÚ on Bass’ Recreation Ground. It will be performed for only the second time in the UK.
The show will “transport the crowds to a magical oceanic world” with “colourful neon sea creatures elevated on a huge telescopic crane cavorting on the lit surface of the sea, with fish and other ocean dwellers weaving their way through the audience on the sea bed”.
