Othello from GSC

Ahead of its 20th production, Guildford Shakespeare Company is hosting a special talk and debate focused on the character of Iago from Othello which the company is stagng in February.

The first in a series of complementary events, this session will explore the nature of the character of Iago, one of Shakespeare's most pathologically psychotic creations, led by GSC producer and actor Matt Pinches who has delivered over 30 lectures on Shakespeare at Guildford Institute and is an Associate Tutor of the University of Surrey. He will be joined by actor Chris Porter, who will be playing Iago in GSC's forthcoming production.

Together they will consider the many faces of this fascinating character and how he ranks against the other great Shakespeare 'villians': Richard III, Claudius and Lady Macbeth.

The 90-minute evening, staged in Holy Trinity Church on Friday 17 January, starts at 7PM and costs £8 per ticket.

Other events in the Othello programme include The Lodge: Shakespeare on Silver Street during which writer Charles Nicholl will be talking about his best-selling book, exploring Shakespeare's life in London at the very time he was writing Othello (includes a book signing), a free post-show discussion with the company, a young actors' workshop and audio-described performance for the blind and visually impaired.

Othello, set against the claustrophobic backdrop of 1950s Cold War paranoia, runs from 5 to 22 February at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford High Street.
