Jabberwocky Market returns to Darlington with four shows this spring.

Named after the beast in the Lewis Carroll poem in Alice Through the Looking Glass, written when Carroll was living in Croft-on-Tees, Jabberwocky Market brings national and international adventurous small-scale theatre events to the town.

The springtime events are:

  • Grass
    Second Hand Dance
    12 March at 11AM and 2PM
    Cattle Market
    For age 2-8
Featuring worms, slugs, snails, spontaneous outbreaks of ant dancing and plenty of obscure insect-related facts, Grass uses performance, puppetry and projection to inspire children to look closely at the world around them, to get mucky and play.
  • Backstage in Biscuit Land
    Touretteshero
    19 March at 8PM and 20 March at 2PM
    Teesside University’s Darlington campus
    Age 14+
Jess Thom has Tourettes, a condition that makes her say 'biscuit' 16,000 times a day. Her unusual neurology gives her a unique perspective on life; one she's unleashed on the world. This two-woman solo show weaves comedy, puppetry, singing, and incredible tics to explore spontaneity, creativity, disability, and things you never knew would make you laugh. Geranium bashing and penguin gangbangs may or may not feature - no two shows can ever be the same. Jess is neurologically incapable of staying on script, and that's when the fun begins.
  • Empire of the Rats
By Van Badham, directed by Selma Dimitrijevic, produced by Luxi
    1 April at 8PM
    Liddiard Theatre, Polam Hall School
    Age 14+
Is the North East of England becoming the UK’s Detroit, like The Guardian said in 2014? Empire of the Rats takea a surreal trip around the region and far beyond. I am a rat, he is a rat, she is a rat, everyone gets to be a rat. Do you want to be a rat?
This is a work in progress.
  • Until You Hear That Bell
    By Sean Mahoney
    23 April at 8PM
Darlington Boxing & Martial Arts Academy
    24 April at 2PM
    The Dolphin Centre
    Age 14+
Told through spoken word and within timed boxing rounds, Until You Hear That Bell is a story about amateur boxing and family. It’s about doing something for ten years and slowly getting good at it.
