Chadderton-born actress Suranne Jones has been confirmed as a member of the judging panel for The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2013.

The former Coronation Street actress will be joined by Dame Jenni Murray (chair); award-winning playwrights David Eldridge and Tanika Gupta MBE; associate director of the National Theatre, Marianne Elliott; artistic director of the Royal Exchange Theatre, Greg Hersov; theatre critic Benedict Nightingale; and chairman of Bruntwood, Michael Oglesby CBE.

The Bruntwood Prize has established itself as the UK’s most significant playwriting awards and is rapidly becoming one of the country’s best springboards for emerging playwriting talent, counting Vivienne Franzmann, Duncan Macmillan, Ben Musgrave and Andrew Sheridan as past winners.

Since its launch in 2005, more than 5000 scripts have been entered, £120,000 has been awarded to 11 prize-winning writers and six winning productions have been staged.

The 2013 competition is open from Thursday January 31 to Monday June 3, with a total prize fund of £40,000.
