My Judy Garland Life will première at Nottingham Playhouse in January 2014

Nottingham Playhouse is to hold a free taster evening for a new play, My Judy Garland Life, which will give an insight into how the production developed.

Amanda Whittington’s play looks at the joy and heartache of hero worship. Based on an autobiographical memoir, My Judy Garland Life tells the story of how author Susie Boyt grew up under the spell of the famous singer.

Sally Ann Triplett, who plays Judy Garland, will make her first performance on the Playhouse stage at the taster evening and will sing two songs.

Susie Boyt will talk about her early life and how she wrote the book that inspired the play while Amanda Whittington and director Kath Rogers will discuss the evolution of the play.

Sally Ann Triplett said, “I knew I wanted to perform from a very early age and my parents would sit me down in front of the telly any time an MGM film was on, so my love for Judy began a long time ago.

“It's a time in history I wish I had been born in and so it feels almost full circle to be playing the lady herself. It's a daunting task but something I’m incredibly excited about.”

Director Kath Rogers added, “I’m so excited to be working on this extraordinary new play, which is a completely original take on the Judy Garland story.

“We see Judy’s life through the eyes of a young girl who seeks solace in the songs we know and love. And we’re delighted to have one of our best-loved musical theatre stars in the title role. Her joy, heart and spirit will bring Judy spectacularly to life.”

The taster evening will be on Monday (11 November) from 6PM. My Judy Garland Life will run at Nottingham Playhouse from Friday 31 January until Saturday 15 February.
