To mark the 40th anniversary of the opening of the National Theatre building, ABTT, in association with the National Theatre, is presenting a symposium on theatre performance and theatre architecture now and in the future. This is an opportunity to hear experts in debate and a rare opportunity to see some technology in action: the Olivier drum revolve.

The symposium will bring together theatre practitioners and the architectural and consulting community to discuss the relationship between theatre and the design and architecture of theatre buildings. High profile speakers discuss how theatre makers at the National Theatre have worked in its spaces and contributed to its success as a place for plays, and consider the technological opportunities of the future.

NT Director Director Rufus Norris and theatre architect Steve Tompkins will begin the discussion and there will be contributions from leading stage designers, technicians and architects. Richard Pilbrow, Paule Constable, Prof Gavin Henderson CNE and Mark Shenton will chair the day’s panels.

As well as looking forward to the future and assessing past National Theatre experience, there will be a look at the role of the Cottesloe (now Dorfman) and a demonstration of the Olivier drum revolve.

Full details are on the ABBT and National Theatre web sites and bookings should be made through the National Theatre.
