It’s been fifty years since Simon and Garfunkel released their seminal album The Sound of Silence. Now in its third year, The Simon and Garfunkel Story is a 50th anniversary celebration of a musical catalogue that became the soundtrack to a generation.
Fresh from a pre-Christmas residence in Johannesburg, the show reaches Liverpool’s Empire Theatre on Friday 8 January.
Described as a "rock 'n' roll docu-biopic", the production charts a musical journey which started in high school and culminated with international acclaim. Starting with their early incarnation as Tom and Jerry through to break-ups and success as solo artists, The Simon and Garfunkel Story also traces a relationship that was as fraught as it was creative.
The show is produced and directed by Dean Elliott, a graduate of The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Elliott, whose previous work includes the leading role in the Olivier nominated Buddy—The Buddy Holly Story, has produced a show that contextualises the music with contemporary events.
“We didn’t want the show to be just a tribute act,” explained Elliott, “so we decided to use the 1960s as a backdrop.” Thus, key cultural and social moments from what was a tumultuous decade are projected onto a giant screen throughout the show.
“I’m really excited and very proud to be bringing the show to Liverpool,” said Elliott, who is not only the show’s producer, but is also undertaking the role of Paul Simon. “Portraying Simon is a great challenge,” said Elliott, “people tend to forget just what a fantastic guitarist he was.”
Making up the other half of pop’s most successful ever duo as Art Garfunkel is accomplished West End performer Joe Sterling. “Look out for his rendition of 'Bridge over Troubled Water',” said Elliott, “It’s a moment to savour.” "Homeward Bound", "Mrs Robinson" and "Scarborough Fair" are just some of the duo’s other hits to feature.
In what is set to be a hectic 2016, the production will be touring various UK venues as well as calling in at Denmark, Norway and Australia.
