Birmingham Stage Company is to get into the Christmas spirit with David Wood’s adaptation of Philippa Pearce’s Tom’s Midnight Garden.
First published in 1958, Tom’s Midnight Garden won the Carnegie Medal for Children’s Literature the following year. It repeatedly features in literary critics’ top ten of the best children’s books.
In the story, Tom has always been told it’s impossible to travel back in time. But when a grandfather clock in the hallway chimes 13 times, Tom is transported to a secret garden from the past.
He meets Hatty and the two friends enjoy adventures in a magical wonderland. But with each new journey through time, strange things begin to happen—and Tom has to solve the mystery of the midnight garden.
Tom’s Midnight Garden will play an 11-week season at Birmingham’s Old Rep Theatre from Wednesday (13 November) until Saturday 25 January before going on a three-month UK tour.
