Jonzi D will host Breakin' Convention at Birmingham Hippodrome

Two days of “jaw-dropping performances” by “world-renowned hip-hop artists” as well as West Midlands dance crews will form Breakin’ Convention at Birmingham Hippodrome.

Part of International Dance Festival Birmingham 2014, Breakin’ Convention will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, 20 and 21 May.

It will be hosted by hip-hop guru Jonzi D, an associate artist at Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

On Tuesday, the local line-up will include self-taught, all-male crew Antics who were among the finalists in Sky TV’s Got to Dance, Staffordshire’s Company Elite featuring dancers aged between 9 and 20 and Marius and Andrei who have developed their work through various Birmingham Hippodrome projects including Jonzi D’s Open Art Surgery.

Wednesday night will feature more home-grown acts including the return of 15 dancers from Birmingham’s Dance Nuvo and Nottingham’s NuProjeks with a crew of eight performers aged between 10 and 30.

Wednesday’s line-up is completed by six-year-old YouTube sensation B-Girl Terra from Fallings Park, Wolverhampton.

She has gained more than six million views after her performance at the Pro Chelles international dancing competition in Paris.

She has been invited to perform on popular entertainment programmes including America’s Ellen Degeneres show.

B-Girl Terra will be joined on the night by her nine-year-old sister who performs under the name Eddie and their b-boy crew Soul Mavericks.

Sharing the stage are hip-hop artists from across the globe. ILL-Abilities are a company of dancers with varying disabilities from across the continents who challenge the misconceptions and supposed limits around disability.

Wanted Posse are being hailed as one of France’s leading and longest running hip-hop dance companies and the UK’s Ukweli Roach rounds up the professional line up.
