BBC Midlands Today presenter Nick Owen will play himself in a new comedy One Year Off which is being staged as part of Birmingham Fest 2015.
This “surreal comic dystopia” involves a ban being imposed on the “beautiful game” in all its forms for 12 months. The play, told through the eyes of four people defined by football, is about “grief, desperation and delusion, and how we confront challenges to our identity”.
It features several short satirical spoofs of BBC television and radio programmes which report the news of a year without football.
A report was written to feature Nick Owen who agreed that FRED Theatre could record him speaking the lines written for his fictional self and then use the recording in the production.
Written by Olly Forrester and Dom Fletcher, One Year Off will be presented at the Old Joint Stock Theatre, Birmingham from Thursday 16 until Saturday 18 July.
