Opera North returns to Newcastle Theatre Royal this week with Macbeth (Tuesday and Thursday), The Girl of the Golden West (Wednesday and Friday) and From Paris with Love: Puccini to Piaf (Saturday).

Daniel Bye's How to Occupy an Oil Rig comes to Northern Stage from Tuesday to Thursday.

Two Live Screenplays by Lee Hall at Live Theatre this week: Rocket Man on Thursday and Victoria and Abdul on Friday. On Saturday the theatre hosts a fundraiser for David Whitaker, one of the founder members of Live, who suffered a major stroke on-stage at the Soho Theatre in 2012.

On Thursday Probe presents Running on Empty at Dance City.

The touring production of Fame comes to Sunderland Empire from Monday to Saturday.

At Arts Centre Washington on Thursday Queen's Hall Arts presents Wishbone, the latest of its BITESIZE series.

The South Tyneside International Magic Festival is at the Customs House in South Shields on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. On Sunday the Customs House Youth Theatre presents its performance for the National Theatre Connections, Heart by Luke Norris.

On Friday Alnwick Playhouse presents it Youth Theatre's production of Same by Deborah Bruce, also part of NT Connections.

On Wednesday at Playhouse Whitley Bay Lesley Joseph stars in the musical Hot Flush.

At Durham's Gala Theatre from Monday to Saturday the Original Theatre Company presents Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks.

The Mousetrap comes to Billingham Forum from Monday to Saturday.

Wednesday is ARCADE Scratch Night at Arc Stockton.

Northern Ballet presents Three Little Pigs at Middlesbrough Theatre on Tuesday, followed on Wednesday by Blackeyed Theatre with Dracula.
