Dickens in Newcastle

A festive partnership between Amble-based Northumberland Theatre Company and creative entrepreneur Craig Wilde, brings The Ghost of Christmas Past to Newcastle theatre lovers.

Dickens regularly visited the city performing readings at music halls and theatres. He also began a relationship with actress Nelly Ternan who lived in Westgate Street, now part of Westgate Road. The Newcastle connection started earlier, when he married Catherine Hogarth, whose father was editor of the Newcastle Chronicle.

Dickens by Candlelight: A Christmas Carol runs from December 13–24 and has been adapted by Stewart Howson and is performed by Louis Roberts in the title role, with supporting cast Nathan McGowran and Melanie Dagg.

Audiences sit in the same room that Dickens himself sat in more than 150 years ago and hear and see his work being performed.
