Seating in the 1,200-capacity Victorian auditorium is to be replaced as part of a £1.1 million refurbishment at Wolverhampton Grand.

The theatre will be transformed over six weeks, with seating across all three levels being replaced. The design of the 121-year-old auditorium will remain untouched. The new seating has been selected in consultation with the City Of Wolverhampton Council which owns the building.

It was announced in April that the theatre was to undergo its biggest refurbishment to date, including a complete renovation of the front-of-house areas on all three levels of the building.

Chief executive Adrian Jackson said, “adding the replacement of the auditorium seating to the grand scheme will be the icing on the cake. The level of comfort of the new seats together with the revised layouts will greatly improve accessibility and comfort for our audience.”

The Grand says the investment will enable it to work in a “completely different” way, increasing opportunities for the public to engage with the theatre outside performance times.

A gala concert featuring the City Concert Orchestra conducted by Adrian Jackson will reopen the theatre on Saturday 10 September.
