Live Theatre and Northumbria University are looking to appoint a new writer-in-residence from September 2018.
The twelve-month residency offers a £20,000 fee, access to space, resources and equipment, cultural and research networks, and support from academic, creative and professional staff from both organisations. It will allow the writer to develop their own practice, with the potential for a further commission from Live Theatre beyond the residency period, and to share their expertise with communities at both Live Theatre and Northumbria University.
The residency programme will be flexible, based on the successful candidate’s other commitments, and aims to be tailored to the writer’s skills and interests, and will include:
-
Working alongside Live Theatre’s creative team in the planning and delivery of creative programmes including active participation in the delivery of the theatre’s artist development programme.
-
Researching and developing an idea for a play that responds to Live Theatre’s mission and identity. It is envisaged that this may lead to a commissioning opportunity with Live Theatre outside of the scope of the residency.
-
Taking a significant role in the creation of a new work developed with and performed by Northumbria University Newcastle Performing Arts students at Live Theatre, and contribute to the collaborative research culture of the University.
-
Contributing to the teaching and learning of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including the delivery and co-delivery of masterclasses in writing and associated theatre / performance disciplines.
Jim Beirne, Chief Executive of Live Theatre, said, “we are delighted to be working with our partners at Northumbria University for a third year to offer this unique residency for a writer to work across both organisations, including the possibility of creating a play for Live Theatre.
"It is an exciting time to join us here at Live Theatre as we welcome our new Artistic Director, Joe Douglas, and have been nominated for our third Olivier Award in two years, an incredible achievement for a new writing theatre located outside of London.”
Steve Gilroy, Director of Performing Arts Programmes at Northumbria University, added, “the Writer in Residence is at the core of our creative partnership with Live Theatre and we’re really excited about the possibilities this year, with the arrival of Live Theatre’s new Artistic Director and the prospect of creating a new work in collaboration with the theatre.”
The Residency Fee is £20,000 and the deadline for applications is 5PM on Friday 20 April 2018. Interviews will be held on Thursday 3 May.
