Newcastle’s Alphabetti Theatre is committed to improving the diversity of writers in the North East of England and so is offering 9 micro-commissions (£100) to write a short audio play that will last no longer than 10 minutes with a maximum cast of 2 actors.

These plays will be produced and released via Alphabetti's online platforms. The aim is to use this as an opportunity to develop relationships with artists and a start to improve the representation of the diverse voices in the North East.

They are specifically looking for writers who are in one or more of the following categories:

  • Identify as a woman
  • Identify as LGBTQ+
  • Identify as a member of a BAME (Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic) group
  • Live with a physical or cognitive disability

Due to the aims of this project, these commissions are only open to those who identify as one of the above (exempt under the Equality Act 2010 Schedule 9, Part 1). Applicants can be experienced or emerging writers and there is no age limit.

Applications are open now and must be received by Sunday 12 July 2020 at midnight.

To apply, e-mail [email protected] using the subject: LISTEN UP – {insert your name here}

The e-mail should have a brief paragraph about you, why you applied for this commission and your contact details, a maximum 300-word synopsis for your idea for your short audio drama and a 5-page sample of your writing that best represents you.

Artistic Director Ali Pritchard explains what will happen next.

“Once we have received all applications, we will draw up a shortlist. We will contact everyone who has applied. We will arrange a phone call to everyone on the shortlist to discuss their idea. From there, we will select our final nine. We will then support you through the creation of your ten-minute script, cast it, record it and produce it.”
